The following was written on a train, but much of it appeared on a thread while I was gone.. a case of like minds rather than a rehash. It’s certainly not meant as an apology for Justin’s actions. Just musings and opinion and reporting back on darkling feelings.

A month later, the dust has – well, it hasn’t done anything. It keeps being kicked up by people demanding ‘one last single’ or ‘one last gig’ which would be the most ridiculous thing.. no chance. It was further disturbed by the appearance of an article by a Sky News journalist, whom Justin apparently told ‘I might rejoin later’ and ‘we all need some space’ I hold my hand up on posting that on forum. I wouldn’t normally, because of the furore it causes, but it had been so long since anything was heard. My apologies for the kerfuffle.

As I’ve been predicting to myself for a few weeks, the length of time since he left and the arrival of announcement from him is proving to be a massively damaging PR disaster for both him and Sue. Her part in it all is being questioned too.. from the wrong angle, in my opinion, but.. Atlantic undoubtedly had a part, but they were never popular with darklings. There should have been a huge damage limitation programme by the Justin camp from day one, or before. The exclusive revelations to the sun with no ‘fans’ only’ version doesn’t sit easy. Lawyers gagging orders do not preclude a statement saying ‘Look, I’m really sorry, I’m not allowed to talk but I will soon’ – Justin has lost so much respect. Only time will tell whether hubris or bad advice or both were to blame. He HAD support for a solo career, but it’s fast dwindling. TD fans are anxious about TD. Whatever he issues now, it’s too late for some.

Is this man truly arrogant? He has a streak of it, sure, but he’s capable of self effacement. He’s stuck with this project for far longer than expected, given his restlessness and need for change. It’s a tangled psyche. Driven, but not like Dan. His stresses lie in different directions. Eager to create, with a talent for composition and lyrics. An attention seeker – learning guitar ‘to get girls’, but the thrill of being on stage didn’t pass him by. He’s going to find it hard before long, not being in the limelight. I don’t suppose that it’ll be long before he tests the water.

Remember him saying that his piercings (nipple and defunct Prince Albert) were a way of punishing himself when he did things wrong? You wonder whether the cocaine abuse was another way. Bulimia – longstanding. The removal of himself from TD could be another symptom of Justin’s feeling that he’s really not worthy of what he has. They’re all forms of self harm. It’s not a case of ‘where did it go wrong’ for Justin. It’s a case of when, and what to do now.

I have some Sympathy for this Devil. He knows not quite what he does, and condemns himself accordingly, as the consequences are not top of his priority list. A downfall caused by his own flaws – that’s the true literary definition of a tragedy. Pity it had to affect so many, so deeply.

And the good news…. Dan, Ed and Richie have been hard at work, and when the legal curtains part, all rock will let loose. Thanks to Dan for taking over his myspace and blogging for us. Much kudos to the lad, and to Richie and Ed. xx

At last! News!

It’s been very strange year, everything in my personal and band life has kind of turned upside down. I’d just like to thank fans of The Darkness for their amazing support over the last few years, and your continued support for My, richie and Ed’s up-coming musical venture (yes we are definitely not down and out!!!). Since Justin’s announcement that he has left the band we have been working incredibly hard. I would just like to let you know (for the first time in this blog) that I AM o.k, very happy in myself, and confident musically with where we are going, and cannot wait to get back out and rock again!!. I can’t give anything else away at this point but will try to keep up my MySpace entries etc….lots of love and thanks…dx

Justin leaves

by Jo

So, the day has come we didn’t want to see. Justin announces he’s left The Darkness. Not leaving, left. According to the short announcement, the rest of the band are in shock, and they were hoping he wouldn’t actually go.. which is why, apparently, we heard about it after the fucking Sun. AGAIN. That’s not FUCKING GOOD ENOUGH. Ahem.

For whatever reason, he’s gone. It’s been 18 months since he said that he was considering leaving during the furore involving Frankie’s departure. In my view, some of the reasons for that near loss probably still stand. His recent rehab for cocaine/alcohol addiction (and/or) apparently worked so well that he’s too clean for rock now, if you believe some of the things I’ve read today. Bollocks. Justin needs to rebuild everything he has, now. Things don’t become starry the minute you finish rehab, and he has the bulimia spectre to deal with too. That boy has worked his guts out for this band since Dan signed him up on Millenium Eve. He’s given everything he has, as a crowd pleaser, showman, comedian, musician and brilliant composer. He’s taken jibe after jibe after jibe, been ridiculed, satirised, stalked, been the object of contempt.. it’s just so not easy to take. He may have invited some of that, but he dealt with it as he should, pouring scorn on those who criticise for a kick, who look for copy, not truth. Shame on you all.

Those of us who love him know his worth. His talents should not be allowed to burn out, and they would quite possibly have done, with the added pressures of the new album and touring on the horizon as well as British Whale’s album to release. Those on their own would have been daunting enough straight out of the Priory, without any other problems. And everyone has more than a couple.. The whole truth will out, eventually, one day. To be honest, it doesn’t matter. Justin’s mental and physical health DO. SixSister wish him all the good things he needs to have, and look forward to anything he wishes to do in the future.

Justin’s genius has gone from TD, on a sad day for all darklings. He wasn’t the band, for us, but he was.. its eccentricity. If the band stays together (too much shock to know what to do next, though Richie is billed as taking over the frontman role, which would be interesting.. and would work) it will be different, but we’ll be there. For the Darkness ethos of seriously rocking fun. For ourselves, the darkling community. And for the three lads that are left, giving every support they need.

On a personal note, I’d like to add that Justin has both been kind and has completely humiliated SixSister in the past. However, it is a measure of his star quality, his talent, and everything about him that has kept us impressed by him, and left us able to write this final emotional, heartfelt tribute to someone who brought us all together in the first place. Good luck. Our thoughts go with you, sweet, funny, sexy Justin, and thank you.

Where we are

by Jo

So.. an odd couple of months. Justin went into The Priory, and as far as we know, is still receiving treatment. Precisely what for is also unknown, but drink, drugs and bulimic tendencies do not make happy bedfellows. I’m sure they’ll all get their proper share of attention in his programme. Jus is usually brutally honest about himself, I’ve noticed. There’s probably far more to it than that too, who knows what’s going on in Justin’s life.. What we want to know is that he’s alright and getting good care. He’ll always have our support, and tahnk the lord no one’s bleating about the third album being held up.. a good thrashing would probably be administered if they did. If there ARE any darklings that have actually visited The Priory, then that’s a damn shame. He’s not in a sideshow – IMO that’s not really an appropriate way to show support. All love to family and friends, from everyone, as has been said so many times on forum.

Richie has been on hols, swanning about Europe and getting his new tatt coloured in.. it should all be lovely and healed by now. Runs his own Myspace, too..

Dan is apparently very busy, with something that will be revealed in due time. The British Whale album producing? On an OU course? Having a baby? Training to be a football coach? A TV series? Oooo I could go on speculating for ever (and I was!). Whatever it is, it’ll have the perfectionist touch. Rob says he’s working hard in the studio in deepest Norfolk. Jolly good show.

Ed’s been seen out and about, as usual. I wonder what he thinks of his old T shirt being sold for £26?

Update from the North American Tour petition – it’s at 800 names at the last hearing, probably loads more by now.

The admin office address changed.

Apart from that, the usual silliness on forum, the odd spat.. we’re waiting patiently and hopefully for news. That boy means a lot to us.

Nothing else to report right this min.. We will, as soon as..

The band’s comment

A message from the band
« on: 16.8.06 at 04:31:34 PM »

After Justin saw a doctor last week and was recommended to “cancel all professional commitments or work-related activities”, we had little choice but to cancel the band’s appearance at the Skanderborg Festival in Denmark, something that the band hate to do, but having been out on the road constantly for such a long time and having not had any time off over the past three years, that’s what Justin has decided to do and we are all agreed that his health must come first.

As everybody found out today, Justin has been admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. We would however like to make it clear that this emphatically does not signal the end for The Darkness, nor are their label Atlantic Records considering ‘dropping’ them. On the contrary they have taken up their option with the band and are looking forward to releasing The Darkness’ third album in early 2007.

We are not here to comment on Justin’s private life – or anyone else’s for that matter – but he is feeling better already and as soon as he is ready we will be going straight into the studio to begin recording album number 3.

We hope you would join us in wishing Justin well – and it is for you to judge if a platinum album, headlining and co-headlining sold out shows across the UK, Continental Europe and Australia, etc. to an audience of tens of thousands of adoring fans can ever be considered a failure!

SixSister on the telly! Maybe…

by Jo

It was a dark and stormy night… oops sorry, couldn’t resist..

It was, though, in Norwich, the night before this Six trotted off to London to see Justin in action the ‘Friday Night Project’, being recorded on the Thursday for Friday’s airing. This did not however clear the muggy weather at all, and the day looked to be a hot, sticky, sore one. I’ve got a blister the size of a £2 coin on the sole of my foot! Flipping hurts..

Dull train journey over, darklings collected. First stop the pub, natch. The Water Rats, which was indeed swimming in water last time we were there. Went to check out the venue, saw a few people sitting out in the blazing sun. Decided the pub was a better option (see the theme developing?) and stayed there. Our delectable Bex had been invited to ask Justin a question, which meant priority seating for her and her gang.. Longer in the pub as well! We trotted past the long queue and got nicely settled in. Took AGES to get everyone in.. needed the loo then, but decided I didn’t want to miss anything so didn’t go.. mistake! Spent an hour or so gossiping, saying hello to a couple of people, getting excited. Got our instructions from the warm up man Andy.. bet he says those things every week.. there was a lot of watching people run about, general boring stuff.. still.. Justin would be there soon..

We get started with JLC and Mr Carr arriving and do lots of clapping etc. then the moment we’ve all been sitting in sweat for.. Mr Hawkins! Looking very fit, lost a little weight, very sexy in his black suit and beautiful curly hair. Cute in his glasses, too. He does his weekly round up intro bit.. wtf writes this stuff? Not him, certainly. Not enough wit. Comfortably sat behind his desk, he becomes his fluent, sarky, funny self, with profanities strung together in a gracefully effortless way. Some of the banter was top quality.. always on the Hawkins side.. I think some of his wit may have been lost, but the darklings present had a good giggle. We often did laugh, but at things no one else would get.. you kind of get a double layer of insight, sometimes.

I’m not going to go through the whole thing, cos it’s on telly and will be taped by nice people. Just when we thought Jus was being sensible, though, we see him on a doughnut again.. aagahhhh!!! Watch out for his impression of Cherie Blair, and the wind up they did.. we met that guy at the tube station on the way home! Bless him, he was so nice. Quizzes, silly bits, the cash coat… all good fun.. banter with Kasabian, who were on the rosé. How amused were we to see a quiz category called ‘The Damp-ness’ ? hee oh happy memories.. Justin did fab for Charlie, winning her a holiday in America with his darts playing. Oh, there wasn’t a known thing about Jus that wasn’t exploited for our entertainment! Bex did not get to ask her question, which she mentioned firmly to him at the end. I did get him to admit to eating all the Monster Munch, and apologise. Bad boy..

Right, to sum up.. Jus was clever, witty, polished, smooth and charming. Looked bloody good, healthy and happy. He was so much more at his ease than on proper ‘chat shows’ and was thoroughly enjoying himself. He has a knack for this, but needs either just to open his mouth and let it flow, or have better written material. Yeah, I know, this show is not supposed to be comedy genius, but Justin has that, so it should be used. Give him the freedom to spout forth, and someone to spark off, and we’re there. Well done, Justin. More, as usual, please.

We milled about for a time, but really couldn’t be arsed to wait when the pubs of Camden were calling. Managed to get to a loo after about 4 hours.. Damn you Hawkins, no one said bladder control was a Darkling requirement.. and once I started, that was it, had to go every 5 minutes… Drinks, buses, bed. No sleep. Am dead on my feet typing this. All worth it though!

Many thanks to.. Chris with the red and black stripy T, Fee, Bex, Amy and Fi, Hollie and Co, Ian and Chris. Hi to Linda and Howie. Kazza.. where were you… so sorry we didn’t see you, girl.

X

Very dark doings

by Jo

Ok then.. only one more confirmed live date to go, this summer… The Skanderborg Festival, Denmark, 10th August, and then we’ll just have to wait.. We have something about the Finland appearance, and will have Liverpool up shortly.

We’ve got album stuff going on in the gaps, with Justin’s British Whale one well on the way.. ‘Snatching Defeat From the Jaws of Victory’. Apparently ‘it’s sounding fab and there will be 12 songs on it. ‘ 10 were finished the last time Justin held forth, so we expect a date anytime soon. Wooooooooooooooooo Justlings are bouncing excitedly… or they ought to be! Is there another video? Will there be promotion for it?

Jus’s Friday Night Project appearance went very well. He seemed far more relaxed than he has done previously. Review of that also in this issue.. I didn’t go into great detail on the content because people will have seen it. It’s a shame that all the set pieces were kept in, because it’s the other stuff that made our night so funny. The script wasn’t good enough for our boy!

Eagle eyes spotted Richie’s tatt during the windup bit.. hot off the press late last night.. he’s done a ‘tour diary’ (torture diary, surely) about it here with some good photos.. www.thedarknessrock.com/tattoodiary
Bless his heart. He’ll be very well decorated by the time he’s finished. I love that he consulted his girlfriend.. I wonder what she wanted him to have? Where?

There’s a lot going on. Can’t wait to see what happens next. More reports as and when.

***************************************************

Well.. Justin’s ill. Cancelled the last gig of the summer on Doctor’s orders, and now we’re told he’s checked into the Priory by the tabloids. Not what for, though.. drink, drugs, or an escape? Tabloids are printing their usual bollocks about The Darkness being a failure and being dropped by Warners. Sigh. Justin surely has enough stresses without even thinking about that possiblity. So much going on in his life.

All of Sixsister’s love and hope for a speedy, but not rushed, return.

and… hot off press. There’s no substantiation for this as yet. Nothing on Atlantic website, though POD have confirmed. I don’t like to add rumours normally, but this one is odd.. no clue as to where the info comes from.

Ilosaarirock 15.7.2006

by Heidi

Few hours of sleep after Liverpool and I was on my way to see The Darkness again. I was too excited to sleep for the first couple of hours of the train ride but eventually just fell asleep. Five hours in the train were over and we were ready to take our place in the front row. Well, not quite so soon. There was a lot to see in the festival area and we had to make the most of it. We weren’t supposed to go to the front row til few hours before the show, but there was a perfect spot for us there and we just couldn’t let it go. So we ended up standing there seven hours before The Darkness came on stage. So there we stood, listening to other bands and artists, which were poo, I might add. Tuomari Nurmio was so god damn boring, and Mokoma… A Finnish heavy metal band. Absolutely horrible. I will never ever again be standing in the front row when a band like that is playing. It was pure torture. Not just the music, but the people around us too. Yeah… Enough of that. There was an hour wait after every band and it felt longer and longer after each band. Last artist before The Darkness was Maija Vilkkumaa. She was ok. I actually knew some of her songs and she did quite a good job on warming me up (I was freezing my arse off). Before Maija came on, we met Ella who’s a huge Darkness fan too. We first met when The Darkness were here in March and it was great to meet her again. We thought we saw Richie listening to Maija too, but we weren’t sure. All the same, we were getting excited. Maybe a bit too much lol

The last hour felt soooooo long. Ella was checking her watch every five minutes and always shouted to the crew: “50 minutes left”, “30 minutes left”, “25 minutes left”. When she finally shouted five minutes, I was literally jumping up and down. And then…

Arrival starts!

God how I love that song. It almost made me cry. This was what I had been waiting for for so long.

It was over soon and the guys came on stage. Dear Lord I screamed my head off. They started with One Way Ticket. This was a bit disappointing because Knockers was such a great song to start with. But it didn’t really matter, I was going to have the time of my life! Let me just say, Justin is one great frontman. He made me cry with laughter. At some point his trousers almost fell off, and Dan was laughing so hard at him. And I got a nice shot of his arse haha.

Richie was amazing. That man can really sing! He and Justin seemed to be having a lot of fun, specially during Girlfriend. Dancing around and just being complete twats they sure did make me and my friends laugh.

Ed and Dan were great! Not much more I can say about them. Just brilliant!

Way too soon the gig was over. Everytime I see this band live, I just love them more and more. This was my fifth time seeing them and I just want to see them again and again and again. Thank God I’m seeing them in Denmark too. I hope they rock Denmark as much as they rocked Finland.

Big thanks to The Darkness for giving me some of the best nights of my life. You guys RAAAAWK!!

Rally To Hell

by Laurie (with Dori)

This is an personal account of two dedicated darklings who were able to go and talk to Dan and Justin.. don’t be jealous, that’s not what they wrote it for. I asked them to, just to share, cos no one else could get there.. just enjoy and rejoice in their luck.

Dori, her sister & I get to the CCCM and see some
people around and they turned out to be the other
members. We asked if we could go in and look at the cars and they said sure. So we go in and check out the cars – saw Justin’s ride and Dan’s was the only Rolls there. So that’s when I got the car pics.

We go back outside and wait. They had the street
blocked off and the cars were parked out on the street too. We were on the sidewalk standing around and then Dori turns and looks. “Justin!”

I turn around and there’s Justin with his suitcase
right behind me! “Hi!” Justin tells us, and then wemove so they can get through. Dan also says hi and we just watch as they go towards their vehicles.

Dori didn’t want to bother them but I walked in the garage and there was Dan. He kinda looks at us and smiles and says hi again, and I’m standing right by the trunk of the car as he loads his stuff in the backseat and then he loads up his suitcase in the car’s trunk.

Anyway, he goes back to talking with the guys from the club and we stand around a bit and watch them as they chat. Finally I get bold and go up to Dan as he’s looking through his itinerary. I told him we had the petition to give him and Dori gets it and hands it to him. I just said we did it to let them know that they have fans here that care about them and love them and want them to come back and play, and he’s looking at me and smiling and nodding and agreeing with me about the fans.

He said, “Well I was just on the phone with the record company this morning, so… We’ll see!” He did look through all the pages of the petition and Dori said we had 600 names and we were trying for 1,000. Dori also told him about the US Street Team and I said, “This is Dori, she does the Daily Dose of Darkness Site!” Dan smiles at her and goes, “DDD!”

Then she gets out her catsuit and shows it to him and I think she also said she was at the British Whale shoot (and I also mentioned that we went to some UK shows and he asked which ones. Me: Newscatle, Brighton, Manchester and Nottingham and Dori went to Manchester). I think that’s when Justin was there and Dori also showed him her catsuit and he asked if it was a riding suit or something and Dori’s all, “No, it’s a catsuit!!” LOL

Later I gave Justin that beaded visor. I totally
forgot it was a women’s size visor. Justin put it on and goes, “It won’t fit over my big head!” I asked for a pic of him in it and he’s all, “I’ll come back!! But he didn’t – liar!! LOL!!

Note from Dori: He called his head humongous when he tried to get the visor on. Ha! I asked Dori if she wanted them to sign her catsuit and she said yeah, so I led the charge back in the garage and asked Justin if he would sign it and he did. It says, “Dori – nice suit! Justin Hawkins”. We thank him and then move on to Dan. He says sure he’ll sign it, and then he does (they both put it on Dori’s back to sign it!! LOL!)

I asked for a picture again and he said okay, so
that’s when Dori took that one. Then I look at his
ride and go, “Oh is this your car” and he grins.

“It’s not mine, but it’s the one I’m driving.” I’m all, “Oh cool! You’re gonna have SO much fun! Don’t get in trouble!” or something like that.

So we got back outside and that’s when Justin was
posing with his car. He was so funny! He made a
comment about his co-driver wearing a shirt that was very “Brokeback Mountain” and then when he was
leaning over the car door, that’s when he said
something about “Whitesnake!”

Then they all load up into their cars and drive off. Dori said she waved to Dan and he waved back at her. I was too busy snapping pics to wave. At one point Justin was on the passenger side of his car and he was looking over and smiling at Dan. It was so cute! It wasn’t until after they drove off and I looked at the pics and saw that Dan had the visor hanging from the driver’s side mirror! I almost died when I saw that! It was so cool!

Anyway, we left a note for them at the CCC thanking them for taking the time to talk to us, and again mentioned that there are fans here who want to see them on a tour. We asked the dude there if they were coming back to NY and he said “Probably!” and said he would give them the note.

THE END

Rock in Rio

by Tiago Andrade

The Darkness At Rock In Rio Lisboa – May 27th. 2006

When the bands for Rock In Rio festival were announced, the major band for the second day was Guns N Roses. When I first saw the bands that were going to play on that day and saw The Darkness I immediately run to buy my ticket for the Rock In Rio.
The 27th May 2006 for me started when my friend Pedro and André stopped at my house to pick me up. It was about 17 o’clock (Lisbon Time). We drove to Lisbon and during the 20km car trip from Cascais to Lisbon we heard a few songs from The Darkness “Permission To Land” album, as a small warm up for what it would became one of my life finest rock nights.
We arrived to Lisbon by 17:30, parked the car and went by subway to Parque da Bela Vista, were the Rock In Rio festival is being held during it’s 6 days.
When we arrived to Rock In Rio the first thing we did was run into the World Stage where 4 bands were going to play that night (Pitty, Xutos e Pontapés, The Darkness & Guns N Roses).
When we found a good place to stay, not too far from the stage the first band of the day started to play. Pitty it is a Brazilian punk/rock band. The afternoon was really hot that day, by 19:30 it was 35ºC in Lisbon.

By 20:30 the most succeeded Portuguese rock band entered the stage, it was time for Xutos e Pontapés. One hour of 20 years of carrier were reviewed by the band as they warmed up the crowd before the British glam rock band “The Darkness” take the stage for their premiere in Portugal.
As the sun went down and before The Darkness take stage, there were already 50.000 people in the city of rock!
By 22:15 we started to hear “Arrival” as the intro for the greatest band of Rock In Rio, the lights went down, smoke on the stage and suddenly we start to ear Ed’s drum the light fades-in in the stage and I’m going completely crazy when I see Richie and Dan on stage, the first guitar chords Knockers and there comes Justin and there we go, The Darkness live in Portugal!
During the middle of the song when Justin takes off his Jacket and on the back of his shirt we could read “Rockers Elite” and for the first time we can really hear the 50.000 crowd to roar, and then Justin comes to the front of the stage and tells to the audience “Olá! Nós somos os The Darkness” that means “Hello! We are The Darkness”, then he goes to meet Dan and say “This is my little brother Dan, in the guitarrr” and Dan start’s some guitar riffs before the music go on.
Before “One way ticket” Justin gives to the public an amazing guitar solo and the riffs for “One way ticket” come in, and during the song chorus everybody sings with the band “One way ticket to hell and back!” and the song finishes with Justin thanking in Portuguese to the audience “Obrigado” he says and again a big noise from the crowd retrieving his words.
Justin once again walks to the centre of the stage and introduces the next music to the audience “We are going to play our last single for you now. It’s called “Is It Just Me?””.
Once again The Darkness presence on stage is huge, Justin and Richie call for the public and everyone in the crowd start’s to sing “But is it just me or am I all on my own again?” and Justin once again improves and says “It sound’s fucking fantastic!” and the song finish after the last verse.
Justin goes once again to change his guitar and when he comes back Dan, Richie and Justin start to interact with us, everyone there retrieved with a big applause and we are in onto “Growing On Me”.

During the first verses the audience comes in singing “I can’t get rid of you, I don’t know what to do,I don’t even know who is growing on who, ‘Cos everywhere I go you’re there, Can’t get you out of my hair, Can’t pretend that I don’t care – it’s not fair”. Until now the concert it’s just being great, I was jumping and singing to every song word and a few people around me were there amazed with The Darkness performance, brilliant guitar from Dan as for Justin’s solo. As the song reaches it’s end Justin goes to Richie they rumor something between them and then he comes back and ask the audience “Having Fun?!” and we all respond with huge “YEAHHHHHH” and Justin replies “Simmm” that means “yes” and again introduces the next song “We now goin’ to play a song from our first album “Givin’ Up” cus I don’t give a fuck ladies and gentleman” as the song reaches it’s end, Justin tell us “Make some sounds c’mon! HEY! Okay we are going to play our first song of our first record for you people!” and Black Shuck and I must tell you great drumming from Ed’s as for Dan’s guitar. During all the song the audience once again sings the chorus “Black Shuck” with Justin has he stopped to let us sing. Around me few people knew this song, and as we started to sing it a few more joined us, jumping and singing. Justin also talks to the audience in the middle of this great song he tell us “This is Richie, his magical in every sense of the words!”. Before “Love On The Rocks With No Ice” we all started to call for the band the you could hear majority of the Rock In Rio audience “Darkness, Darkness, Dakness” like if we all were in a football stadium supporting our team.
Justin goes to pick up his guitar give us a short but brilliant warm up guitar solo, and Dan goes into the first chords on “Love On The Rocks With No Ice”. To tell you the truth this was one of the songs where the audience really joined the band and loved every single bit of it.
Once again no words to describe what happened during this song, Dan’s solo was amazing and then Justin came in and joined Ed in his drum bit and started to play Queen “We Will Rock You” in his guitar, and all those Queen fans in the audience like me went completely crazy and once again joined the band by singing “We Will We Will Rock You” and to tell you the truth I could see in all 4 member’s face that they were loving every single part of the show, that was why they were here, to Rock Lisbon!
Justin come in to the front and started to play with the audience “Whooo” and we repeated “Whoooooooooo!” than he went up into a higher tone “Yeahhhhhh” and once again we repeated “Yeahhhhh” than Justin started his hard falsettos and that was too hard for us and the show gone on and when the song it’s over Justin thanks to the audience in Portuguese by saying “Obrigado”.

Justin introduces the next song “This is our very first single ever, and it’s called “Get Your Hand’s Of My Woman” Motherfuckerrrrrrr” and we are in fore more genial Rock N Roll!
When the song reaches it’s end Justin once again started to play with us by singing “Mother” and we all repeated “Mother” than he goes into “Fucker” and all we repeated “Fucker” and finishes by saying “You are fucking fantastic!”
“English Country Garden” from is the next song to be played and Justin gives a small improvisation in his synthesiser and we are once again in into one of my favourites song from “One Way Ticket To Hell…And Back”.
After “English Country Garden” we are in into “Girlfriend” great performance by Ed and also Dan, and great but great singing from Justin. After “Girlfriend” the centre of the stage is taken by Richie, and here is something I wasn’t expecting at all, a wonderful cover from AC/DC “Highway To Hell” and “Thunderstruk” awesome cover’s from the band as for richie’s performance. This first cover was one of the highlights from the concert to the majority of the audience, everybody knew this two songs and were able to sing along with the band, but for me The Darkness concert highlight were about to arrive.
The concert at this time was almost at its end. “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” followed and what a great song live. Justin falsettos in this one were awesome, great guitar’s as for the drums and bass guitar. Almost everyone knew this song from MTV, and were able to sing it. When the song reached it’s end my friend Pedro told me that probably that have been the last music from The Darkness and I couldn’t believe it, since it was one of the Highlights and I needed to hear and see with my eyes “Bald” live, my favourite The Darkness song. Justin once again comes into the centre of the stage and tell us “So you are looking forward to Guns N Roses tonight hun!?” and a huge “Yeahhhhhh” is the response from the audience and I screamed with my friend Pedro “Nooooo!” right, we were there for The Darkness, off course i wanted to see Guns N Roses live, but today guns it’s not the same thing and The Darkness were Rocking on stage stealing the Rock In Rio festival for themselves. Then Justin added “Well are they the greatest band of all time!? Well that’s why we are here! We are going to play one more song, and than the stage is all yours okay? This song is from our current album, thank you very much for being here with The Darkness.”
When the guitar chords for bald start I went just mad, sing into every word of the song and once again jumping and rocking.
When the song reached its end I was completely Knocked Out, I thought that in 2005 summer I had seen it all with Queen + Paul Rodgers but surely I was wrong, because I never had been into a The Darkness concert.
That night, that show became my 2nd greatest show of my entire life. After Queen + Paul Rodgers and The Darkness I don’t believe that I will see something like that.
After Guns N Roses concert, that was powerfully, but not such powerfully as The Darkness. In overall The Darkness stole the entire Rock In Rio festival for them selves they are a massive Rock force on stage and they’re presence as musicians as for entertainers is in the Top.
The show was transmitted live on television and I was able to record it into DVD, and named it “One Way Ticket To Rock In Rio…And Back”.
To finish I would like to thank to all The Darkness community as for The Darkness for they’re Staying Power!
The Darkness set list : Arrival; Knockers; One Way Ticket; Is It Just Me?; Growing On Me; Givin’ Up; Black Shuck; Love on The Rocks With No Ice; Get Your Hands Off My Woman; English Country Garden; Girlfriend; Highway To Hell – Richie; Thunderstruck – Richie; I Believe In A Thing Called Love; Bald.

More of their bits

by Jo

I’ll have to do a running commentary, things happen so fast…

First off, Australia was conquered, and as far as we know, so was Japan.. unfortunately Dan ‘lost his homework ‘ so we’ll never find out. He’s currently being forced into a bikini to have his bits waxed, as punishment. Lesson 1. Don’t let down the darklings. They’re a funny lot, and have vivid imaginations.

Darkness in a POD??? For a MONTH??? No it won’t be funny to see them argue. This is a PR stunt for lesser bands. TD don’t need to whore their talent this way… and the mystique of the creative process should stay just that. Now, bouncing Justin’s wit off the unworthy on Celebrity BB would be awesome.. but would he survive without his security blanket laptop?

Things go into a media frenzy over the next few days.. Justin on Jonathon Ross, talking about the new British Whale single ‘England’. Now THAT’S a footie song. A real one. After the dismal Embrace offering, all nice and PC and utterly unsingable, some diehard goth acquaintances were moved to wonder why TD hadn’t done the official one. ‘Emily,’ they cried ‘It would have been perfect!’ Well, yes, it would. I mentioned that enough people already saw them as a joke band, but it would have been fab.. and now Justin saves the June 2006 pub singalong from the depths of despair. Terribly unPC lyrics, I understand. www.myspace.com/britishwhale for a listen.

Top Gear!!!! Justin gets back with his mate Jeremy (with whom he spent time closeted at the OWTTH..AB launch party) to ‘wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!’ the pants off other people who think they can drive. Chortle. Comedy time, one way or another, if the silly arse doesn’t break anything..

‘Girlfriend’ release put back a week to May 22nd.. you knew that, but I’m trying not to miss anything.. the most wonderfully nostalgically evocative video for… ooo… ever.. the only thing I didn’t wear was the bomber jacket, and my stuff was all black. I’m still sniggering from the first time I saw it, never mind the last..

Now then.. have I missed anything… umm… Yeah… Jonathon Ross. Illuminating for the masses, but not long enough, in our opinion. Most of it was fairly old news to darklings, but I was pleased that the ‘body image’ thing came up. Jus is Jus, whatever shape/size he is, and he should listen to the darklings on that one. Someone find Justin a platform.. headline a chat show.. he deserves to be heard. We’d quite like to hear him, too.

The North America Tour issue has a separate article, so I’ll leave that.

The boys are home! Someone tie them down for a bit! Make them buy more bespoke leather furniture, have more helicopter lessons, lose gloves, pop into Norwich, get to number one… mmm. Tis nice to know they’re back.

Sydney rocked

by Jessie

Flamboyant rockers “The Darkness” took Sydney by storm recently on Thursday 13th April.

Playing a sold out show at Luna Park’s Big Top and an hour and a half set, they proved why they really are saviors of rock and roll.

I had heard from various people that the sound quality at the Big Top is not very good and that I shouldn’t expect to hear much, they were wrong. From where I was standing (front row, left hand side) the sound was spot on, song after song it was perfect. However, towards the back of the venue the sound wasn’t very good, or so I’ve heard, but I have no complaints.

The first three songs played were from the new album, “Knockers”, “One Way Ticket” and “Is it just me?” It was clear right from the beginning that this was going to be a fantastic show.

Next they went into a series of songs from ‘Permission to land’. Nearly the whole album was played, every song apart from “Stuck in a rut” and “Holding my own”. It was a surprise to hear them play songs like “Black Shuck” and “Givin’ Up” I was glad they played them, it made my night.

All four band members were on full form that night. Ed’s drumming has gotten so much better and he is so full of energy, this was shown best in the performance of “Love on the rocks”. Richie fits right in with the band, I was blown away when it came time for the “Ac/dc” covers, I had no idea that his voice was that good.

Dan, hidden behind a mass of hair, was amazing. His guitarist skills have always blown me away, but to see him on stage playing guitar did actually bring me to tears.

Justin’s voice is better than ever! He really is a true performer. I especially loved his voice during the performance of ‘Blind Man’. That song was an un-expected surprise for me, at first I wasn’t into it live, but then they completely changed the song towards the end adding in guitars and drums making it truly one of the best performed songs of the night, apart from a small stuff up that Justin made, it wouldn’t have been noticeable if he hadn’t have pointed it out, as a true performer does he laughed it off saying “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”

The other songs played from the new album were “English Country Garden”, “Seemed like a good idea”, “Hazel Eyes”, “Girlfriend” and “Bald” which was the closing song of the night. It was a nice mixture of the old and new throughout the night, making for one wicked show.

During “Bald” Justin got off the stage and onto a security guards shoulders and did a walk through the crowd whilst playing his guitar. It took me awhile to figure out where he had gone though as I kept looking at the stage wondering where the hell Justin had disappeared to, but soon enough I turned around to see him in the audience.

The only downer of the night was the volume of the audience being far to quiet, Justin mentioned at various points throughout the night that we weren’t loud enough, and I can agree with him, I would like to think I was one of the louder ones though as I didn’t shut up the whole night. However towards the end of the show the crowd had taken the hint and increased the volume.

The whole show was a success, performance wise everything was perfect, sound wise, perfect, Bring on the next Darkness show I say.

Atlantic divide

Recently Spin Magazine published an article called One Way Ticket to the Cutout Bin. Here is a piece of that article.

SPIN Magazine, April 2006 – One-Way Ticket to the Cutout Bin

Why are so many highly anticipated albums landing with a thud?

By David Sprague

“Less than 24 months after The Darkness’ near platinum debut, the campy Brit rockers’ anxiously awaited follow-up, One Way Ticket to Hell…and Back, entered the charts at a tepid no. 58 – only to fall off the Billboard 200 after two weeks. More than a million folks picked up Franz Ferdinand’s first album, but only 298,000 have done the same for You Could Have It So Much Better. What happened?

‘Franz Ferdinand was probably our biggest record of 2004’, says Chris Vanderloo, co-owner of New York Other Music record shop. ‘For a part of the audience, the band got overexposed. Other people seemed to think that the new one was just the same album all over again and got tired of them.’ The Darkness, by contrast, may have suffered from severe underexposure around the time of their album’s release last November, which left many unaware that it was even on the way. The band spent little time in the States for publicity, played no promo gigs, and didn’t even perform the first single when they appeared on Late Show With David Letterman.”

To many this wouldn’t alarm you, but then again if you live in the UK, Continental Europe, and Australia and Japan you have no need to worry. Why is this an issue, then? To the thousands of North American fans this article sums up what many of us fear, never seeing The Darkness Live on our shores again.

During the summer of ’05 fans worried about ever getting a new album. That moved on to worrying over the need of perhaps importing the new album. The publicity train seemed to be upon us. Besides the numerous UK interviews and Classic Rock’s deeming the album “Album of the Year”, the US magazines started to buzz with interviews as well and there it was (pardon the Para-phrasing) “We plan on touring the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan and the US.” *gasp* THE US. (Side note: I believe Canadian dates would have been included in that tour.)

I was pleased as punch. I have been waiting for another US Darkness tour since June ’04 and I am still waiting. An inside source let a few of us in on the possibility of a tour May, then it was June and finally we were told that a tour of One Way Ticket to Hell…And Back (OWTT…AB) would not happen. The reasoning behind no tour is Atlantic simply will not fund a tour due to OWTTH…AB poor ticket sales and the likelihood that the album would not sell any more if they did tour. Umm…..excuse me!

Let’s look at the figures first. They sold nearly 500,000 with PTL and OWTTH…AB is around 200,000. So 5 nights in the US and maybe 2 over in Canada at venues holding around 1,000 people is not doable? You’ve got to be kidding me Atlantic.
Let’s tell the real reason why no promotion and tour are happening over here. I’m not scared to say it, but Atlantic got overrun by Warner Brothers. Yes, folks it has happened again. Big corporation takes over and screws everything over in the end. There hasn’t been any promotion here because Atlantic has idiots working for them on TD’s account. It is bad, Atlantic, when fans do more in the ways of getting people to buy a group’s album then you do. It is unforgivable that fans in today’s modern age of internet were not made aware of the two promotional things TD did over here. (Void this comment Atlantic if you’re still utilizing the typewriter.) It is inexcusable that do to your Label’s mistake fans should have to suffer.

What do we fans do? How can we get TD over here? Not that traveling to foreign countries is not fun. It is a ball. I love the UK and Europe girls and guys I have met in doing that. However, I understand that only adults are able to do that. It is the kids who suffer with no tour. It is the thousands of fans in a market who are gnawing themselves to just savor seeing The Darkness live. Many have heard the stories or live them and if you’ve lived them you know, THERE IS NO OTHER NEW BAND ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET WHO CAN BEAT TD LIVE. Fact! If you need more proof go gander at TD’s Myspace page of countless comments begging for a North American tour.

Fans here want it and to get it we have to work for it. I am starting by sending a letter in response to Spin’s article. Explain why you feel Atlantic dropped the ball with TD and explain how they have dropped the US tour. Please don’t contain your anger, but remain respectful as Spin might choose one of the letters to place in the comments section of an upcoming episode. (I do hope one makes it.) If every fan who reads this send them a letter asking them look into why the North America is not getting a tour, they would take notice. Why Spin? Unlike other music magazines they have always talked about TD as a genuine band. Regardless of personal opinions on the band they have treated them well.

Secondly, send a letter to Atlantic themselves and demand a tour. Now that may take numerous letters, but here is the thing. Just make copies of the same letter and get a book of stamps, send one a week. The letter doesn’t have to be long. Just get the basics in- We, the fans, want The Darkness to tour North America.

It is time fans took control again. Surely Atlantic could find the money to let TD tour North America for a small tour. That is if they get their lips off of James Blunt’s ass. I know it is wishful thinking, but if we all did this we could get a tour. At least we may get some press for it. Let’s fight so we can all rock out together.

Send it here for Atlantic Records-

Milan 17.3.06

by Mélanie

Mazda Palace, Milan, 17.03.06

Brussels was 4 days ago and we are already here, queuing, waiting for the Italian security to open the doors of the Mazda Palace… How did that happen? Oh, yes, I remember, it was February 12th, and we were driving back from Sheffield, MY UK tour was over… Oddly, the first thing I did when arriving home was to book a ticket for Milan.
Anyway, we’re here. Waiting. It’s 19.10 and it’s said on the ticket that the opening should have been at 19.00… The crowd begins to boo and call the security. That’s the first time on the tour that I saw so many people waiting for the doors to open. But they finally open the gates and once they’ve checked our tickets, we run to the venue. I’m glad I’m not wearing any heels…
When we arrive inside the venue, the first rows are already packed, but we manage to find some place on the second row on (all together now) Richie’s side (good, I see some of you are following)… the crowd is already dense, which is quite uncommon on the sides, especially before the opening act. And it’s also really weird to be in the middle of a crowd you don’t understand a word of what people say.

Doomfoxx finally begin their set. They’re great. I like them. And they get the crowd head banging, and pogoing from the very beginning of their set. All the crowd, even the parts that are usually quiet. Even on the Richie’s side. My friend and I look at each other, hoping they’ll all calm down. They’ll NEVER calm down, even during the break between the bands. I’m cursing myself for not having had a real meal in the last 24h. I already feel I won’t be able to stay here for the rest of the show. I just don’t want to collapse in this pushy crowd. I also don’t want to be under painkillers for my back for the next 2 months.
But the boys are finally here, following the say routine. Arrival by Abba, then Ed behind his drum kit, Richie, Dan and finally Justin. The crowd goes mental, and I feel my boobs being crashed on the girl who’s lucky enough to be on the barrier. I also feel a lot of elbows in my back. I’m looking at my friend when the band encourage the crowd to give more. We both yell at each other “don’t fucking encourage them!”… We’re still laughing, because that’s completely insane. And the boys like it. We’re the best crowd they’ve had so far. Cool… I’m happy to know that, I’ll send you the doctor’s bill.
The show in itself is great and the boys deliver us one of their best shows. After 4 songs, I begin to feel really light-headed as I get more and more blinded by the lights. It’s time for me to get out of here. A security guy grabs me just after Givin’ Up (or was it Black Shuck?) and lifts me out of the crowd. When he puts me back on the ground, I feel my knees going weak and for a second I think I’m going to fall on my knees, here. A deep breathe later, I gain control of my legs, grab my clothes and bags and walk away. Just as I walk by the speaker, Justin hits a very high note on his guitar. Now, to the pain in my back, I have to add the pain in my ears.
It takes me one song to recover, seated at the very edge of what looks like the VIP area. I don’t notice it at first, though. The security guy keeps pushing away the people that want to stay here. That’s when you realise that being a girl with a “nice” (normal) cleavage in Italy is an advantage. I ask him if I can stay there and he nods to me. That’s standing on the seat just under the Doomfoxx crew that I’m watching the end of the show. From here, I can also check all my friends and make sure they’re all ok (now, you can call me mother)
And the show is as great here than in the crowd. Correction, it’s better (and safer for me). I’m jumping, dancing on my seat, trying to not fall from it. I’m also laughing when Justin sings “Happy Birthday to me”. Birthday boy seems all happy tonight. That’s cute. I look at the crowd when Justin asks us to put our lighters in the air. It’s impressive. It’s been a while since I have last felt that touched by Love Is Only A Feeling. This is such a sad song, as is Seemed Like A Good Idea. I feel almost romantic tonight. But it’s Blind Man time, and this song rocks on stage. This is, for me, one of the highlights of their set. I love the live version of it. It’s perfect! And gets me rocking on my seat.
Hazel Eyes, Get Your hands Off, it already feels like the end of the show. And it’s soon Girlfriend time. Justin introduces it as the band’s next single. It isn’t new to me, but it always makes me feel happy to hear that. How pathetic. I’m jumping, giggling, dancing. Ah, this song rocks my socks off and I can’t understand why people don’t think it’s good enough to be a single.
Oooo, but it’s time for the Brummie to take Justin’s place. I’m wondering what they’re going to cover for us tonight. Highway To Hell. Great! And he knows the lyrics this time! The entire crowd sings along with him. Thunderstruck. It takes a bit before the crowd begins to sing the “aaaaahaaah”s, but everybody is here for the massive “thunder”s. My only regret about this cover? That it isn’t the entire song. When they stop it, I feel like… on the edge. You know “yes yes” and pfft, nothing. Teases!
I Believe In A Thing Called Love is incredible. I’m in love again with that song, since Milan.
I see them leaving the stage… and come back for the encore.
They play English Country Garden and Bald (it’s like the most difficult word for me to pronounce), as usual. But this time, Justin isn’t flying in the air nor is he walked in the crowd by a roadie. Too dangerous. I see them disappear, as I’m waving (stupidly) at them.
See you soon, hopefully……

Belgium 13.3.06

by Mélanie

Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, 13.03.06

There are things you think about a lot before deciding to do them… And there are other things you don’t even think twice before saying “yes, I’m going to do that”. That what happened with the Brussels show.
It was decided 2 days before the show (on the Saturday) that we were going to make it. Decision was taken in 2 minutes and a half. Without regrets!
I arrived at the venue 15 minutes before the opening of the doors, and only 10 persons were queuing in front of us. I had no doubt we’d be on the first row.
Indeed, while I was sorting my ticket’s problem (I didn’t book any ticket for that show and counted on my legendary luck to find one), I joined my friend who was already waiting on the barrier. First row, Richie’s side. That could only be good!
Doomfoxx soon entered the stage. And I have to say I was impressed. They were good, probably better than the openers on the UK tour and delivered us a very strong set. They got us headbanging by the third song and we were finally fully ready for the Darkness to begin their show.

After the usual preparation of the stage, when we all can admire Justin’s new golden guitar, the venue goes dark and Arrival by Abba begins. I’m wondering how they’re going to enter the stage, without the knockers-mobile. I see Ed sitting behind his drum kit and realise I’ve never been that close to him during a show. He begins to beat Knockers’ rhythm. Richie shortly arrives into the light. Have I already said that I love THIS bass line? No? Well, I’m saying it now. I love it. Dan begins to play the riff and I see Justin enter the stage. It’s the fifth time I’m seeing them this year and I’m as excited as the first time in Dublin. One Way Ticket, Is It Just Me. I’m so close to the stage, it gives me the feeling they’re over me.
The band is in top form, and the audience feels it and reacts. People behind me begin to jump and push and I’m trying in vain to push back the excited teenager that uses my shoulders to rest his elbows. But I don’t care, I’m having fun. And I’ve known worse.
The setlist is the same than the last times. But this time, it isn’t Is It Just Me? that is announced as the next single. No, it’s Girlfriend. When Justin begins his little speech, I already know what he is going to say, and I want to punch the guy 1 meter away who yells “Hazel Eyes”. Nope, it’s Girlfriend. I’m already bouncing.
The other novelty of the setlist measures 6’5”: Richie. He sings. What I’ve heard before the show made me eager to hear that. I’m not disappointed. The boy can sing. And this is the most hilarious Highway To Hell I’ve ever heard (apart from the one I sing under the shower…). Which was supposed to be a short extract of the song ends in the full version, with Richie mouthing to the crowd “help me, I can’t remember”… Well, something like that…
One song before the encore, I Believe In A Thing Called Love, then it’s English Country Garden and Bald, where Justin, as he used to do before, played the solo on the shoulders of a roadie walking him in the middle of the crowd.
Even with a few technical problems with Justin’s mic during Growing On Me and the sticky tape that doesn’t want to stick on Richie’s head to hold his erm? Monitor earplug (whatever it is called for real…), the show is perfect and gets the crowd begging for more. Small venues-1, arenas-0…
But it’s already time to go… See you in Milan!

Amsterdam 23.03.06

by elusive

So – the last gig of the European tour. Amsterdam. My envelope of “forthcoming gig tickets” is empty, and it seems only yesterday that it was stuffed full. Better make the most of this final show then, before the band depart down under.

The Heineken Music Hall is pretty sparsely populated when I arrive, and Doomfoxx have just come onstage. I like this band, they’re a good choice of support for The Darkness, being good old-fashioned solid rockers, and their set is just right for getting the crowd warmed up. Nice touch is that the singer donned a Darkness t-shirt (and this gesture is reciprocated later when Justin does the whole show in a Doomfoxx t-shirt).

Just before TD step up, I scan the crowd and thankfully the place has filled up quite a bit, although it’s by no means a packed house.

Since the last gig I attended was the riotously successful Milan show, this one has a lot to live up to, and it doesn’t quite have the same magic, but it comes pretty close. There are a couple of technical problems (Dan’s guitar, Justin’s mic) but they don’t detract too much, and everyone seems on form tonight. It’s a straight rock gig, as many of the European shows have been – no boob chariot, no high wire, no pyros or flames. And much as I love the spectacle that goes with all that in the bigger arenas, this to me is better somehow – more about the music and the band’s performance and less reliant on image and effects, which a band this good actually don’t need. And Justin has shunned his stage trousers for his jeans! Yes, it’s dress-down-Thursday in Amsterdam.

I’m not going to analyse the gig song by song, as the set hasn’t changed and we all know the songlist by now, although I should just mention “Girlfriend”, which saw the crew emerge from the wings, in cheerleader-style shorts and tops, and doing their best “last night of the tour” Flashdance routine, which gave everyone a good laugh, including the band. And “IBIATCL” which saw a big gap open up in the audience just behind me as the Dutch fans punched each other and hurled each other to the ground – which is, according to the girl next to me “what they do here when they are really enjoying it”. Strange people, the Dutch!

But overall, a couple of things spring to mind – firstly, how tight the band have become, and secondly, how well Richie has fitted in over the months. I admit to having my doubts at first (aesthetically I had always thought Frankie looked the part), but over the course of the UK and European tour, Richie has really made his mark and it’s hard to believe he hasn’t been there since the start. UK fans didn’t get to see “Highway To Hell” on which he takes lead vocals, but believe me – it’s one of the high points now and is probably one of the best covers of a song ever done by anyone.

There’s really no-one to touch The Darkness live. They have the songs, they have the stage-presence and they work damned hard to put on a great show, so they deserve every bit of success they have achieved so far – in fact, no – that’s wrong – they deserve a whole lot MORE success than they have achieved so far.

So… over and out from the Heineken Music Hall, and don’t forget – The Darkness refresh the parts other bands cannot reach.

PS: thanks to the helpful person who recommended “this bus will take you directly and stop by your hotel”. It did. Except it went round the practically the whole of Holland first and took about two hours longer than the metro would have done. Was it all worth it? You bet it was!

Odd thoughts

by Jo

So.. thoughts on the tour? Well, every darkling thoroughly enjoyed the shows they went to, even if one or two had issues with the sound at some venue or another. There were so many new people there. New to TD, I mean… absolutely fantastic! But it’s so odd to be on the barrier and be the only one singing… I think they converted a lot of people with the music, the show, the humour, everything. All the TD virgins told me afterwards how great it was. And indeed, it was.

Did they enjoy it, though? They looked very happy to be back on stage, professional, tight, gorgeous sets, playing silly buggers.. but it can’t be easy playing to some half full venues and then still having to win over some of the (home) crowd. I had heard that the venues would be smaller on this tour, but they weren’t, not really.. They did a bloody good job, rocked hard, with grace and humour.

Dan’s European Tour Diary at TheDarknessRock.com/tourdiary shows just how much they are enjoying playing and winning over previously unsecure territory in their domination masterplan. And the rock and roll manner in which it’s being done.. with the odd casualty (something happens to them every time!) There are things there that the home audiences would have loved to have seen, though. Richie’s ‘Thunderstruck’, for one. Did all this evolve from the UK tour? Was it just not rehearsed cos it was an idea on the way? And only one pair of trousers, Justin? Were they Frankie’s sparkly shirts?

Dan notes that the venues are bringing back the old days for him. Me too! I WANT people to be converted, and to see them, but I want everyone to be willing them on too.. the atmosphere in a smaller place is hard to beat for that! It’s a flying v crowd walk thing, I suppose. SO jealous of the people getting the walk, right now!

It’s such a good feeling when you hear of the excitement and success they’re giving and having on this tour. It makes me wonder how they did feel about the UK one. I hope it wasn’t disappointment, after the results getting abroad. There are so many TD starved places that they might decide to stay where the thrills are, and that… would not be good..

One last thing.. there was someone missing from 6’s tour, without whom lots of the fun was lost. Love.

Dublin, London, Brighton

by Trina

Here we go again …
Dublin, 4th February 2006
So, here I am again, at the ninth Darkness gig of my gigging career (ok, so I started late), in Dublin’s fair city. This evens things up after previous tour dates in England, Wales and Scotland – I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland, and Dublin in particular, so I’m following my usual pattern of travelling to cool places to see The Darkness… and to coat another hotel bathroom in glitter.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The actions of a reasonable adult who should be allowed into the community without supervision.
After a slight missing ticket mishap, I was permitted in to see our lads open their European tour. And what a show it was! From the uber-sexy opening grind of ‘Knockers’ to the roaring finale of ‘Bald’ those boys rocked The Point Theatre to its foundations, off the quayside and into the river. And by coincidence, Justin was airborne for both of those tracks – something I was expecting due to a tip-off from Sixsister.
This show really has to be seen to be believed. I can describe it, but you really had to be there. For the price of a ticket (not mentioning flights, hotels, beer money, etc as it would make you cry) you can be rocked sideways, laugh your arse off and be squiggled senseless. Bargainous.
OK, so the stage set is new and different and in keeping with the whole Hell theme. The drums are on a platform shaped like the front of a hell train, and are backed with a pair of gigantic Devil horns. There is a sloping runway up each side of the stage, leading to a platform high up behind the drums.
Right, showtime.
Once JATL have stopped assaulting us, I leave my people-watching at the bar and take my seat. Fab position on the balcony, Dan’s side, second row. The growing crowd are occupied with lots of wonderful videos from my teenage years (and a bit of misty-eyed remembrance of my Morten Harket crush). These are followed by a Darkness video montage, accompanied by AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’. Whoever put this montage together has my undying love and the use of my car forever, as its fantastic (the montage, not the car). A brilliant mix of the best old and new video clips, with the vital Justin pelvic thrusts (*scream*) and bum wiggles (*thud*). If there is ever a live Darkness DVD released, this montage and the 2004 tour montage MUST be on it. Please?
And now for another treat: the next thing on the big screens is the band apparently in the back of a taxi. The taxi turns out to be a helicopter, which lands in the dark. The band get out and race across to what appears to be an outside toilet, but which apparently is the stage entrance to the Norwich UEA. Yup, its video footage of the band arriving for the Norwich warm-up gig the previous week, but a lot of the crowd here thinks it’s the band arriving NOW and give an enormous cheer.

The lights go down to a cheer, the stage is bathed in blue light (another cheer) and Abba’s ‘Arrival’ starts, so I have to phone the sister so she can share in the excitement and knee-trembling. As ‘Arrival’ ends, we see Ed scurrying into position behind the drums – cue big cheer from the crowd. He starts thumping out the beat to ‘Knockers’, then we are treated to a spotlit Richie (in rock god black leather trousers) on the high platform picking up the bass line. Very grindy, very sexy. Another huge cheer (are you surprised?).
The intro is extended a bit from the album version, as it gives Justin time to make his grand entrance. The sexiness factor goes through the roof (and dampness abounds) as the second spotlight flashes on to show Dan, on the other end of the high platform belting out the guitar part. As Dan and Richie come down the ramps to the stage, Justin takes to the air in the booby chariot and acknowledges the crowd with waves, kisses, wiggles and whatever else he can think of. In the break in the middle of the song, he says hello to the crowd, and asks for their opinions of the boob chariot. He asks for everyone to wiggle their boobies at him, but keep them clothed as this is a family show (ahem). As the beat thuds through the crowd, the nipples on the booby chariot flash in time, earning another deafening cheer.
As the song ends, Justin comes back down to earth and gracefully leaps out. He comes back to centre stage carrying the sitar, and shouts a big hello to the crowd. I get a closer look at his outfit – the strange hairy trousers and a sparkly white shirt (I really want to say blouse). Dan has sensibly got rid of his smart jacket but has kept his black Thin Lizzy t-shirt on. Pah.
The sitar means we are going to be treated to ‘One Way Ticket‘, which is quickly followed by ‘Is It Just Me’. The crowd get suitably involved, then erupts as ‘Growing on Me’ is played. Its great to see the band looking so happy and involved and generally glad to be doing what they do best. Justin is constantly wandering over to Richie’s side of the stage, and although we don’t know what he’s saying, it must be funny as Richie is constantly grinning and giggling. Jus doesn’t do as much wiggling behind Dan as I’ve seen at previous shows, but he wanders over to him a lot too. Let us in on the joke lads, please?
The show rocks on, with ‘Dinner Lady Arms’ and Givin’Up’ and Justin attempting to remove the sparkly shirt (blouse!) to show us his Beer Gut Of Fury – as usual he gets his hand stuck in the sleeve and has to go across to Stage Richie to have it pulled off by a member of the crew. The Beer Gut of Fury was frankly tiny, as were the moobs and love handles. Don’t believe what you read in the press, Justin is not porky, he probably doesn’t weigh any more than 12 stone – he just isn’t the wafer-thin waif he was previously. And from what I’ve seen from subsequent shows on the tour, the weight is dropping off him, so soon there won’t be a wobble left.
A weird change now. Next up is ‘Black Shuck’ then ‘Love on the Rocks’, both of which used to be played at the end of a gig and used to give me mixed feelings – joy because they are fab hard-rocking anthems and sadness because we were nearly at the end of the show. In the middle of ‘Black Shuck’, Richie shows off his guitar skills by making his bass make all sorts of weird screams and shrieks. I see what he means in the tour programme about going to the toilet before the show – its pure, brilliant “brown sound”. Of course, watching his black-leather clad trouserage and bass guitar in close-up on the big screen did wonders for certain ladies in the audience *insert angel smiley here*
We move on to the ‘Erection Section’ where anyone who came to the gig alone must rub up against someone in the audience. The piano is rolled out and Dan and Richie get a sit down to play acoustic guitar for ‘Love is Only a Feeling’. Cue the pretty blue and purple lights playing over the crowd, but still no falling leaves. This beauty is followed by ‘Seemed Like a Good Idea’ then Richie and Dan (and possibly Ed, I couldn’t see) leave Justin on stage with the piano. Justin plays and sings ‘Blind Man with only the piano for accompaniment and it is beautiful. I had my doubts as to whether this would work in their live set, with all of the lush strings and harmonies (and people either love it or hate it), but it works. Close-ups of Justin on the big screen suggests he is having a little difficulty keeping a serious straight face, but that’s ok. For the final chorus, Ed is hammering the drums and Dan and Richie are again up on the high platform. The lights come up and Dan and Richie come down onto the stage for a huge rock-opera type finish that raises goosebumps. Fabulous, and the huge cheer it earns is well-deserved.
An acoustic guitar on a stand is brought on for Richie, which he plays standing up for ‘Hazel Eyes’. I’d only ever heard this live once or twice, so I was interested to hear how it had improved as a live version. ‘Tis great, but you’d probably guessed that.
Cue a lot of prancing from Justin for ‘Get Your Hands Off my Woman’. Again, the crowd goes wild at this oldie, but they don’t seem to realise that their role is to scream “Motherfucker” as loud as possible when requested by Justin. Never mind. Maybe we should compile a gig guide so Darkness virgins know what is expected of them.
The piano is wheeled back on and we bop along to ‘Friday Night’, then a second keyboard is brought on for Richie. After yet more mucking about from Justin, we get ‘Girlfriend’ with twin keyboards, brass effects and Justin skipping around the stage, playing both his piano/keyboard and Richie’s. The crowd does its bit, rocking their arses off and clapping along. Good work.
The piano disappears again and Justin does yet more guitar chord twatting about (a bit of a theme here) before blasting out the opening riff to ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ which gets the biggest crowd response of the night. The track kicks off with fireworks and includes Justin’s guitar hump across the crowd, but no request from Justin for thumbs at the “everything is A-OK!!” Spot the people who’ve been to a show before – they are the ones there with the double thumbs without being asked. The crowd redeems itself by getting their hands in the air for the synchronised handclap at the end.
The band leaves the stage and the lights go down. As usual, the crowd sets up a chant until the boys come back on. As the lights come up, Justin is revealed perched on the high platform, playing demonic chords on his enormous organ. And looking mightily proud of said organ.
There has been a costume change – Justin is now in the black and white catsuit and Dan has changed into a green t-shirt with white Thin Lizzy logo. And away we go with ‘English Country Garden’ followed by ‘Bald’, the closing track. This was another track I had doubts about hearing live, but not to worry because it is terrific. Very dark, very heavy, very loud. Perfect. Justin tops his previous crowd-walks atop a roadie and crowd-tiger rides atop the white tiger by coming out on a harness to sail above the crowd whilst playing the guitar solo. He doesn’t just hang there though … this boy has been practising his backflips and looks very graceful in his harness. Its also possible to see he is enjoying himself enormously as the crowd wave and jump up towards him, but he is just out of reach. The track ends with enormous amounts of heavy drumming, fireworks and the devil horns bursting into flame.
The band come to the front of the stage and acknowledge the standing ovation they so richly deserve. There are minor scuffles in the crowd as fans fight over the bits and pieces the band throw down to them, then everyone disperses into the night.
An utterly amazing gig, as expected. Thanks a million lads.

Alexandra Palace, 7th February 2006
Some might say I’m mad, but this is my second Darkness gig in four days, and I’m over the top excited. Why? Because its my birthday and I’m doing one of my favourite things – seeing The Darkness live. I have my sister with me, and she is talking to me (just) after I went to the Dublin gig without her.
We had a quick drink at the bar, bought a programme each and perched in a corner to read and drool over the programme. Buy one, its great. Lots of yummy new pictures. We managed to locate Fee and I had a birthday hug and frope, and we swapped glitter and body fluids. We also met with Webbie, who was lurking by the merchandise stall. The question “are you Rob?” to someone with Robert embroidered on their shirt will go down as one of the daftest ever, but he didn’t seem to mind. He is a pocket-sized sweetie. With a boob obsession, but we knew that anyway (joke Rob!).
As this was a standing-only gig, we managed to get very close to the stage and had a brilliant view. We were standing Stage Dan at the sister’s request, directly under the track, so we got a very close look at the boobies as they sailed over our heads. We also got a fantastic view of Dan – no complaints there (especially as he was almost constantly at the front of the stage, with his foot up on the monitor). We also discovered that Dan looks very good in pink, as he changed into a pink Thin Lizzy t-shirt for the encore. Bless, the static made his hair stand on end, so he had a fuzzy hair halo for the final two tracks. Soooo cute.
The setlist was the same as at the Dublin show, but that’s ok. I didn’t get a Happy Birthday wish from the stage (*pfffffft*) but we did get a wink from Justin as he hung over our heads at the finale. What a view.

Brighton, 15th February 2006
Woo and yay, another gig. Probably my last for this tour, as the funds and my boss’ patience are both running out, but its been fab whilst it lasted. This gig’s memorable moments include finally meeting with a member of Sixsister and almost drowning Sue Whitehouse with my pint of cider.
A word to the wise – if you ever go to Brighton, beware of the one-way system which eats cars. After the trauma of actually finding the hotel, I wandered downstairs to meet my lovely Darklings Emilystrange and Willow and was almost flattened by their welcome (literally!).
The Brighton Centre is a good venue, in my opinion. Its not too big, so even the balcony seating feels very close to the stage … and the bar serves Strongbow on draught. I regretted that the next day, when the hangover arrived. The good thing about being sick in the shower is that it gets washed away very quickly, so it wasn’t too bad.
This gig echoes the previous two by being rock-your-arse-off-fantastic. Memorable moments include the very short trip in the boob chariot (as the ceiling wasn’t strong enough for Justin to do a circuit of the crowd, he just hung there), Justin throwing the sitar to the side of the stage during ‘One Way Ticket’ and the introduction of a beautiful sparkly red guitar. I couldn’t tell you what sort of guitar it was, as I’m not a guitar geek. However, it was gorgeous and I want it. Justin’s voice sounded fine to me, even though he was complaining that it was as ropey as a piece of old rope.

So … The Darkness are back and doing what they do best. If you get the chance to see them live, grab it with both hands as the show is fantastic. The stage set is great, the lighting is out of this world, the effects are dazzling and it goes without saying that the lads are on top form. The band seem very happy and look like they are enjoying themselves. There is a lot more on-stage interaction between the band members, but the flipside seems to be a lot less interaction with the crowd compared to previous tours. Justin didn’t seem to be giving the crowd as much stick as I’ve seen in the past, with the exception of threatening to have the bar closed during the Erection Section at Alexandra Palace, as far too many people were leaving to go to the bar (although he did ask someone to bring him a pint if they were going to the bar). He didn’t once tell off the seated section of the crowd for being seated, and he didn’t really complain about lack of reaction from the crowd. Very un-Justin-like behaviour.
Thanks a million boys, I definitely had the time of my life.

Hamburg 11.3.06

by Eli (supported by Cora)

The Darkness-Concert review

The first German TD-concert of the OWTTHAB-tour took place in a club called “Große Freiheit”,a smaller venue for about 1000 people. Beginning: 19:00 pm.

We (Cora and I) arrived at 18:45 pm and heard the last song of the supporting act “Doomfoxx”.
As the club wasn´t overcrowded at that time, it was no problem to reach the first row, left side, immediately. During the break we considered the best way giving our birthday presents to Justin and finally decided to throw it on stage in a plastic bag, hoping not to hurt anyone.

For me it was the first time seeing TD live and although Cora has seen them several times live on stage, we were both trembling and full of expectations. Checking the cameras again and again…

Then the lights went down and while more and more people rushed in (the club was sold out),
the first tunes of Abba´s “Arrival” were played. The air was vibrating, a shouting and cheering crowd. And finally they entered the stage:
Ed took his place behind the drums and was mostly hidden, so we couldn´t face him for the whole show. What a pity! But we could hear his powerful drumming all the time.
Dan appeared and he stood right in front of us. So near, couldn´t believe it. Looking so gorgeous in his black jeans, black Thin Lizzy (what else) shirt and a black jacket, which he got rid of very soon.
Richie, wearing black leather trousers, well-formed and a black muscle shirt,
and finally Justin in his very tight and sexy black and white trousers and jacket and a black muscle shirt underneath. He took off the jacket and the shirt later, asking us, if we wanted to see the “Flames”. What a question! ( A German magazine called him “greasy”. Shame on them!. He is very proper and in a good form.)

Then the first lines of “Knockers”. Hands up. The crowd was enthusiastic from the beginning. Justin´s voice sounded so powerful, he did a great performance, animated us. He seemed to be everywhere, flirting with us.
Dan played on the left side most of the time, very concentrated and full of passion, far away…( have a look at those “guitargasm”pics and you know what I mean!), wandering around and posing from time to time. And we were happy, if we could catch a view on his face without his long curly hair covering it most of the evening. Interesting to see that he changed his guitar after every song.

Richie had his position on the right side, but whirled around during the whole show with a happy smile on his face, played with fun and showed it. Shaking his hips together with Dan, playing in front of Ed. Richie fits 100 percent and you can feel the strong bondage and the vibes between all group members. A good team, enjoying it to play together.

That evening they really gave their best .They worked their arses off for us. They rocked us and so did we. The crowd was getting louder with every minute, jumping, dancing. And what a marvellous light show! We were electrified from head to toe, everyone joining the TD Family, singing every line of each song, no matter if old or new:

“One Way Ticket”.., “Is it just me?”,” Growing on me”,” Dinner Lady Arms”, “Giving up”, “Black Shuck”, “Love on the rocks”, “Love is only a feeling”.
Dan´s solo at “Seemed like a good idea”:and Justin´s voice at “Blind Man”: Very touching.
Then “Hazel Eyes” and “Get your hands off”. We were animated to join in again and Justin shouted out: “ You are so loud” (Of course we were!)
Then a short episode in German language: Justin´s question:” What is “Motherfucker” called in German?” is answered by a vibrating crowd. He didn´t get it three times and so the microphone wandered around and a friendly German chap finally gave the answer.

Rocking through” Friday night” and “Girlfriend”.
Richie started a solo: Beginning with AC/DCs: “Thunderstruck” turning to “I believe in a thing called love”. Everyone´s shaking again.

Then at least Justin´s ride on the shoulders of some strong men with his blinking guitar. He came very near to us. Cora reached his shoulder. I failed taking a pic of him( without his head, but his nipple on). Nevermind!

They disappeared from stage after their last song and were called back so loudly to give us two more songs: “English Country Garden” and “Bald”.

Our ears were still ringing afterwards and we went hypnotized to the bar and took some drinks, then had a short look at the merchandise (nice men behind the counter, by the way)
and went to the wardrobe.

I should tell, that we managed to give the birthday presents to Justin in the second half of the show. Cora grabbed out her shirt with “Sexgod” on it, shouted three times at Justin and he took notice of her. The presents were handed to him. He looked at the shirt, called out:”Oh, Sexgod!”, grinned and gave us to understand that he would open the other presents later.

We met some friends and decided to wait for the group at the backdoor. Hamburg didn´t have so much snow for ages and it was icy cold outside . Who cares? The things you do for your favourite musicians!
We talked so much, that we nearly missed them. They were already standing there and we hurried up.
They were good-humoured with a bottle of beer in their hands. We took photos, autographs were given and we had a little chat. Cora outed herself as the shirt girl and Justin even asked who gave him the little giraffe (one of my presents). He was pleased and friendly.
Richie was very open-minded. He asked, if we enjoyed the show, said that he loved Hamburg; but not the weather. He was very interested in what he was looking like in our pics. His comment: “Oh terrible” (We don´t think so!)
Oh and I have to apologize Dan for not asking him about his injured wrist (Tour diary Helsinki). I was too excited. I forgot it. Sorry!
Finally they all slipped into the tour bus and we were left behind very, very happy.

At the end of the review, I want to thank TD for their awesome live show and the little time afterwards.
Hope you´ll soon come back to Hamburg and play another hot show ( so hot – like Dan said in his tour diary – “ that their trousers had to be prised after the show!”)

The Darkness at Birmingham

by Davey

Birmingham NEC, 19th February 2006

I nearly didn’t make it to this gig. Stood in the middle of Birmingham, freezing my scrattocks off, I was fearing the worst; that my chauffeur had gone AWOL on me.
Luckily for his general health, he turned up only an hour late (by this time my limbs were encased in solid ice), and by the end of the night I had forgiven him (well, he did pay for my t-shirt…)
We arrived on the venue floor just as Juliette and her band of merry Licks hit the stage. I’ll take this opportunity to express what a fantastic live band they are, and what a breathtaking frontwoman Juliette Lewis is. Not only a talented singer, but with boundless energy on the stage, her body rocking with the music. I’m not usually keen on skinny girls, but I must admit to having a bit of a crush on her…
I loved the fact that the spaces between acts were so short, so there wasn’t any time to get bored and/or narky. Same with the night before in Manchester, it was only a half hour wait after Juliette et al, with some classic rock videos for entertainment, whether laughing with or at them. It was glorious to hear once again the magnificent ‘Arrival’ softly curling through the crowd, as we all gazed upwards in anticipation. There was a beautiful moment when I looked around and everyone’s eyes were fixed on the stage, wide smiles across their faces, genuinely elated and safe in the knowledge that they were about to have a shit load of fun watching one of the best live acts on the planet.
You just couldn’t fault The Darkness that night… we made a point of standing on Richie’s side, and had decided early on to give him a warm welcome home. Not once did I think, “this is weird without Frankie…”; quite the opposite. Richie fits so incredibly well in the band, there’s no doubt and no denying it. There’s a constant air of “nice bloke” about him, but that doesn’t mean he can’t rock out hardcore style with the best of them. He’s got energy, aggression, and he loves what he does. You just know that he’s genuinely happy to be there, to entertain you as best he can. And, naturally, we gave our all in return, if in the slightly more subtle way that the NEC crowd conducts itself.
Justin (who’s looking better with a bit of meat on him), pranced, danced, and shook his ample arse as generously as ever, melting some stunned faces with the use of Philip the Ibanez, prompting us to sing along (perhaps to compensate for the fact that his throat felt “as rough as a bear shit rolled in fish hooks”). In fact, we were close to singing the whole of ‘Growing On Me’ without him until we were stopped and treated to the original (and best) version. Dan and Ed carried themselves with the quiet dignity we’ve grown to know and love… that is, until Justin made a spectacle of young Edwin and he was forced to shy away from our screams of admiration. Bless his cottons. He’s improved so much; after all the stresses of his band almost falling to pieces, having a ray of sunlight (namely Richard Edwards) entering the band seems to have given him some extra confidence, and he’s got a lot more power behind his unique drumming style. You’ve just gotta love ‘im.
I didn’t see much of the younger Master Hawkins on the Sunday, but I was more on his side the night before – and how on earth does he make such violent head banging look so graceful? You can’t say he’s not ridiculously talented, dextrous with his weapon, and with such lovely hair to boot.
The highlight had to be ‘Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time’, with some surprisingly gorgeous backing singing from Richie and Dan (sitting on stools in a rock ‘n’ roll Westlife style – but this can be forgiven), and Justin on piano, with tiny flames dotted about an otherwise shadowed crowd creating a truly outstanding ambiance.
That said, all the songs from ‘One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back’ and the equally outstanding ‘Permission To Land’ were played with all the vibrant intensity we’ve come to expect, which left me and thousands of others with a cathartic sense of satisfaction. After it all, I felt nice and warm skipping back to the car at silly o’clock on an eventful Sunday night.
Take heart, lads; some of us get it.
